Kathryn McLean née Anderson (March 20, 1908 – May 15, 1966), best known by her pen name Kathryn Forbes, was an American writer and memoirist. Many of her works were based on the experiences of her family.
Forbes was a radio scriptwriter and later began publishing short stories. Forbes published the first two chapters of her novel, Mama’s Bank Account and Mama’s Roomer in 1942. Mama’s Bank Account, her best known work was published in 1943 about a Norwegian family living in 1920s San Francisco. Her heartwarming stories focused on their simple aspirations and their often difficult struggles, dreams and determinations, happiness, and sorrows.
Forbes’ book served as the inspiration for John Van Druten’s 1944 play I Remember Mama. RKO Pictures bought the rights to the novel and later bought fifty percent of John van Druten’s Broadway adaptation and made a deal with the play’s producers, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. RKO Pictures distributed the 1948 film, which was directed by George Stevens and starred Oscar Homolka, Edgar Bergen, Irene Dunne, Barbara Bel Geddes and Ellen Corby.
A popular long-running television series was broadcast on the CBS network from July 1, 1949 to March 17, 1957. In addition to the John van Druten adaptation, McLean’s novel was twice turned into a stage musical. The first was adapted by Neal Du Brock and John Clifton and opened in Buffalo, New York in 1972, with Celeste Holm in the role of Mama. In 1979, Richard Rodgers wrote the music for the second musical version for which Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann played the role of Mama.
In 1947, Forbes published another novel, Transfer Point, regarding the daughter of divorced parents. Unlike Mama’s Bank Account, for which she drew on the experiences of her Norwegian-born grandmother, the later novel was closer to Forbes’ real-life childhood.
Peggy Wood (February 9, 1892 — March 18, 1978) was an American actress of stage, film and television.
From 1949 to 1957, she played matriarch “Mama” Marta Hansen in the popular CBS television series Mama, based on the Broadway play and film I Remember Mama. When General Foods cancelled the program, there was so much protest that CBS brought it back on Sunday afternoon, this time as a filmed series. As the network did not have all the legal clearances that were needed, the show was put into syndication, where it was a huge success. It total, there were 26 of these episodes that were filmed. Following “Mama”, Wood was also seen in episodes of Zane Grey Theater and an episode of The Nurses which co-starred Ruth Gates, who played her sister Jenny on Mama.
Richard Vincent “Dick” Van Patten (born December 9, 1928) is an American actor, best known for his role as patriarch Tom Bradford on the television sitcom Eight is Enough. He began work as a child actor and was successful on the [New York] stage, appearing in more than a dozen plays as a teenager. He later starred in numerous television roles including the long running CBS television series, I Remember Mama and Young Dr. Malone. Later, he would star or co-star in many feature films including Mel Brooks’ Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Charlton Heston’s Soylent Green and the Academy Award winning Charly.

Now, with this bank, they have high interest savings accounts. I decided one day to open an account because at the time, the interest was 3.5% and I’ve seen it rise to even 4%. Now, go to your local bank, and find out what their interest rate is on a savings account. I can guarantee it will not be that high. Unfortunately, due to the decline in the economy, the interest has lowered down to 1.5%. But either way, here’s the kicker…
ING Direct’s high interest savings accounts have absolutely NO FEES. This means you are never charged a service fee by them. You can take your money out whenever you feel via online money transfer, or bank machine, without ever being charged a penny. This also applies to their new Checking accounts, which I’ve also opened an account of. Now look at your last statement and tell me how much your bank robs from you each month, hell, each year, just to spend your own money. I thought so. But there’s more…
When I first opened my account, I wanted to start a real savings plan because it’s something I never really stuck to. I seen interest paid monthly, and it wasn’t just a penny or two, it was dollar amounts, with little in the account. This excited me. Then, they came out with a referral marketing strategy to bring on new customers. Now don’t let this scare you away, this is 100% legit. Word of mouth goes a long way these days for businesses. The deal was, I would get $13 for every customer I referred to them to open up a high interest savings account. The only catch is, the referral had to open up with an initial deposit of $100. Now if putting away $100 scares you, then you can stop reading and leave now. If you’re serious about saving, then continue.
So you take $100, throw it into this new account. It’s tied to your local bank account you have now so that you can switch money from accounts back and forth as you please. Once you make the deposit of $100, not only would I get the $13 bonus, SO DO YOU. So instantly you’ve made yourself $13, just for opening an account! How great is that? But wait, it’s better!
For every 10 referrals I make, I get a bonus on top of the normal payout per referral. I thought to myself one day, I’m going to make a video and put it on YouTube and see what happens. I put up the description with the video and let ‘er go… Maybe a few weeks later I got an e-mail from ING advising of a new referral and a deposit of $13 into my account.
