I have been saving my money for years in a savings account for the purpose of buying a new vehicle. Next week I want to go ‘barter’ for a car and then pay cash (so I can get a lower price.) What is the best way to pay from my savings account?
I won’t know the exact amount beforehand, so I couldn’t get a cashier’s check. Is it possible to get temp checks for a savings account?
You can’t get checks for a savings account, and it would be highly unlikely that a seller would accept a temporary personal check anyway.
Do your negotiating with the seller, and then tell him you’ll be back later that night or the next day with the cash.
If you pay actual cash, and not a bank check, make sure you get a valid signed and dated receipt. It would be even better if you can get a witness to sign as well.
I am looking at opening my first savings account…Im 26 yrs old and financial savings is deff not my area of expertise so if anyone has some sound advice on where to open an account (such as Roth IRA) or anything else for that matter…..I just want to open an account that is legitimate and let my money grow…..any suggestions
There really is no such thing. Standard bank demand savings accounts are only paying around 0.20% to 0.30% right now. You may find rates a bit higher on "internet" banks. Alternatives are CDs (if you don’t mind tying up the money) or money market funds (those are not FDIC insured).
Opening an IRA is a great idea, but it’s designed for RETIREMENT investing – not as a savings account to park money for short term needs.
I highly recommend the books "Personal Finance For Dummies" and "Investing For Dummies." Lots of good basic information are in them in easy to read formats.
