ING is paying 3% on savings account. They are an online bank based in Belguim.
Credit unions such as Envision or Vancity are both paying 3% on their online accounts. Their regular accounts are paying much less. Check with any credit union where you live and ask for details on their accounts. You can also look up their rates online.

I’m self employed and want to open a savings account for my 1 year old daughter. Money from family and friends she has received for gifts. I have to be on the account as well because she is a minor. Will I have to pay taxes on her money if my name is on the account?

My younger son (age 10) wants a easy access bank account and has been searching around for a good rate. He likes the look of the Abbey Flexi Saver for Kids with the Cash Card. He would like a cash card or debit card so he does not have to travel to a branch every time. What account would you recomend for him and which is the best bank / BS. Thanks

Abbey are a good bank, I’ve not had many problems and I’ve had my account with them since I was 13. The cash card is handy, so you can draw money out from a cash machine…but I think you have to be 16 to get a debit card? (From abbey you do anyways!). Encourage him to get a savings account too!

Yes! There is an excellent website called http://www.bankrate.com. This website keeps daily track of rates banks are giving on money market accounts, savings accounts, certificates of deposit, mortgage rates, credit cards, and a whole host of other information. It tracks banks all over the US (even small ones). Because most banks have online banking, you don’t even necessarily have to be located geographically near a bank to have your money making interest there. I learned this from personal experience — I used bankrate it to find the best paying money market account for my needs, and it was at a bank in NJ, even though I’m in CA!
Also, while we’re on the topic, another great tool is http://www.mint.com. This website is a great budgeting & financial planning tool. Basically, you input your credit cards, bank accounts, investment accounts, etc. It tracks your spending, breaks it down by category with easy to understand graphs, and makes suggestions on how you could save money (on everything from where you buy groceries to the credit card you’re using).
